Should Your AC Unit Be Covered in the Winter?

HVAC January 22nd, 2026 Back to HVAC Blog

When colder weather arrives, many homeowners wonder whether they should cover their outdoor air conditioner for winter. While it may seem like a smart way to protect your system from snow and ice, covering your AC unit can often do more harm than good.

At Moyer, we’re frequently asked this question—and in most cases, our recommendation is not to cover your air conditioner during the winter.

Why Covering Your AC Unit in the Winter Isn’t Usually Necessary

Modern air conditioners are designed to live outdoors year-round. Today’s systems are built with weather-resistant materials that can handle rain, snow, freezing temperatures, and seasonal changes without issue.
Fully covering an AC unit, especially with plastic or vinyl, can restrict airflow and trap moisture, leading to problems such as:

  • Rust and corrosion
  • Moisture damage to electrical components
  • Mold and mildew growth
  • Rodents nesting inside the unit
  • Frozen coils caused by trapped moisture
  • Possible manufacturer warranty concerns

Because air conditioners rely on open airflow, blocking ventilation can cause hidden damage that shows up when cooling season returns.

When Limited Protection May Help

In certain situations, light protection may be beneficial, such as when your unit is exposed to falling branches, heavy debris, or ice buildup from nearby trees. Even then, airflow should never be restricted.

Safer alternatives include:

  • Placing plywood over the top only to deflect debris
  • Using a breathable, vented top cover
  • Clearing leaves and debris before winter
  • Scheduling professional HVAC maintenance

Heat pumps should never be covered, as they operate year-round and require constant airflow.

The Best Way to Protect Your AC This Winter

Instead of covering your air conditioner, the best protection is preventative care:

  • Keep the area around your unit clean
  • Schedule routine HVAC maintenance
  • Replace filters as recommended
  • Address small issues before winter sets in

Your system was built to handle the elements—it just needs proper care.
