Clogged Drains

With the holidays comes extra house guests and lots of food. While your family and friends fill your heart with happy memories, they may also fill your drains with items that do not belong there.

Here are some of the most common reasons drains get clogged during the holiday season:

Putting the wrong foods in the garbage disposal.
You may think that your garbage disposal can break down anything. It can’t. Whether you’re hosting Thanksgiving dinner or a holiday get together in December, there are certain foods and scraps you should avoid throwing in the garbage disposal, like veggie and poultry peels, large bones, rice, pasta, and shells. You and your guests should throw these items directly in the trash can to avoid clogs, damaged pipes, and other issues.

Pouring grease down the drain.
When you’re ready to clean pots and pans full of oil, you may be tempted to pour it all down the drain. Doing this may seem like a good idea, especially when you’re in a rush, but as grease cools, it thickens and can stick to the pipes, leading to clogs. Instead, pour any fat, oil, or grease into an empty jar or bag and throw it out later.

Flushing the wrong items.
Make sure there’s a wastebasket in your bathroom so your guests aren’t tempted to throw inappropriate things in the toilet. These items include Q-tips, tissues, hair, dental floss, feminine hygiene products, and “flushable” wipes that aren’t good for your home’s plumbing system. When these objects are flushed, they can cause the drains to clog and backup, leading to an overflow and other plumbing issues.

Showering back to back.
More guests in your home mean more showers to take. Typically, when everyone is in a rush to get ready, your shower runs back to back. If you have multiple people showering with no breaks in between, your pipes may suffer. Tell your family and guests to leave some time between showers and ask them to wash out the drain and remove any hair when they’re done. Leaving hair, soap, and shampoo in the drain can lead to clogs and backups.
