What size propane tank should you choose?
The size of the propane tank that is right for you depends entirely on how you will be using propane.
Propane tanks range in size from portable 20lb tanks to tanks with a capacity of 2,000 lbs.
1,000 Gallon Tank
Size: 16’ 2” long; 41” diameter
A full tank holds 800 gallons of propane.
Residential use: This size is best when relying on propane to provide heat for larger square footage homes and/or homes using propane to run all of the household appliances.
Commercial use: A 1,000 gallon tank is ideal for a business with large commercial appliances that also uses propane for heat. This size tank is also recommended for fleet and transportation refueling.
500 Gallon Tank
Size: 9’ 11” long; 37.5” diameter
A full tank holds 400 gallons of propane.
Residential use: A 500 gallon tank is best for a household using propane for heat. It can also provide power to 2-3 propane-based appliances like hot water heaters, space heaters or generators.
Commercial use: This size tank works best to provide businesses with heat and power for cooking. A 500 gallon propane tank is also best for certain agri-business needs.
250 Gallon Tank
Size: 7’ 10” long; 30” diameter
A full tank holds 200 gallons of propane.
Residential use: A 250 gallon tank will provide power to two home appliances, such as hot water heaters, pool heaters or generators. It can also help to power supplemental heating units.
120 Gallon Tank
Size: 4’ 6” long; 30” diameter
A full tank holds 96 gallons of propane.
Residential use: This size tank is best for a home using propane for a hot water heater on its own or 1-2 small appliances (dryer, cooktop).
Commercial use: A 120 gallon tank is best for dry cleaning businesses or businesses that require propane for cooking or heating small spaces.
