Boxelder bugs are common to our region, found mostly near their natural hosts, boxelder trees. Whether you have one or a few of these trees in your yard or neighborhood, you’re probably familiar with boxelder bugs.
The female boxelder bugs lay eggs in the bark of the boxelder tree in the spring. Their offspring develop into adult boxelder bugs over the summer and by fall there is a whole new population seeking warmth and shelter in your garage, outbuildings or home. They will hide in the cracks and crevices of walls, windows and doors.

“The service people in all areas are wonderful and very pleasant to deal with. This is very important to me. And, they have done an excellent job removing the pests.”
Boxelder bugs are about one inch long, with black bodies and bright red striping. They feed on the seeds and leaves of female boxelder trees as well as ash and fruit trees. The boxelder bug is not dangerous to humans. They don’t bite but if you make contact with them their mouths might puncture the skin, resulting in a welt resembling a mosquito bite. The only damage they might do to your property is leaving behind stained surfaces.
Getting Rid of Boxelder Bugs
Secure your home
If you’re noticing large groups of boxelder bugs on the exterior of your home, make sure your windows, doors and window and door screens are sealed to prevent them from coming inside. Install door sweeps to help seal entryways at the thresholds.
Spray them with water
Spraying large groups found on exterior surfaces with a garden hose won’t kill boxelder bugs but it will put them off of continuing into your home.
Remove boxelder trees
If you have these host trees on your property, consider removing them if the level of boxelder bug infestation is in large numbers or to prevent boxelder bugs in the first place. Please be aware, the source of your Boxelder bug issue could be a Boxelder tree as far as 1/2 mile away.
Sweep them up
Grab the vacuum cleaner and sweep them up as soon as you see them. Make sure you replace the vacuum cleaner bag each time you do this, so they don’t get out and put you back on square one.
